For the last official day of fashion week, we were a little too tired to attend any major events, but definitely wanted to support our good friends Krystal and Christina, the beautiful designers behind Marie + Annette. Showing up to the venue, we noticed a little line, which is hard to take either way, but in this happenstance, it was definitely worth the wait.
Shades of pink, soft baby blues, whites and solid black hues dotted the room as the designers played with their concept of an urban tea party. And what a tea party it was, filled with flowers and tea sets and grass. The room made you feel as though you were transported to a magical garden, in what clearly was a trend for this fashion week. It seemed tailor-made for their Spring 2017 collection and the artsy yet magical vibe felt a little Alice in Wonderland, without all the crazy. The official event description for the SS 2017 collection aptly read “A modern interpretation of classic tea party attire where old-world fashion collides with contemporary silhouettes (and) feminine details sprinkled with urban influences.”
I definitely loved the fact that the designers complimented the looks with some of hip hop’s top tracks from Rihanna to Fetty Wap to Wale and back to Beyonce, as that injected the room with much needed energy and the choice of wine definitely helped keep spirits high.
For those who were fortunate enough to attend Alice and Olivia’s presentation, you knew what you were getting into. The event wasn’t without hiccups as a few of the models couldn’t bear standing for too long and passed out as though they were at Kanye’s show, however the designers were very attentive, ensuring every few minutes that water was available for models and they would rotate to avoid fatigue of standing in place.
One of the qualities that make the garments so stunning is how well the sisters integrate fabrics and silouhettes into their designs, seemingly as focused on the look and feel of the garments once draped as much as the actual construction. This was amazingly well executed and very apparent as guests could literally stand right next to models and see the texture and fit on a real figure. Big points for uniqueness as well. Despite the pieces clearly coming together as a collection, it is clear that any of the garments could have been seen on a rack at Bloomingdales on their own.
All in all, the presentation was incredible and only a taste of what’s to come from these two amazingly talented ladies. It might have been a presentation on the very last day of fashion week, but it was one of the most memorable for us. It feels great to support smaller designers and Marie + Annette are definitely ones to watch.
